5 out of 5 stars Should be used in schools   January 4, 2009

After reading the first couple chapters of this book I couldn't help but wonder why nobody had ever taught me this stuff in school. The author does a wonderful job of helping you to enjoy mental math and making it easier all at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for learning mental math tricks   December 12, 2008

This book provides easy to understand strategies for dramatically improving the speed of mental calculation. It is easy to read, and the strategies are effective. I also bought "How to calculate quickly" and "Short-Cut math" and this was clearly the best of the lot.

this is practical, efficient arithmetic. if you take the time to master Dr. Benjamin's left -> right method for addition, subtraction and multiplication then while someone else is digging out their calculator, opening it, turning it on, and entering the problem (maybe incorrectly) you've already checked the answer in your head and moved on.

the division simplification and square root estimation (uncannily accurate) methods are also excellent.

one thing could be better. his treatment of mod sum checking falls short. if you reduce down to 1 digit as you go and ignore all 9's both in number and in all interim sums, then mod sum checking gets slick fast and it's easier to add that function to your mental calculator. also he doesn't mention mod sum checking of division. you can do it, but not by dividing.

modsum (quotient) X modsum (divisor) = modsum (dividend - remainder)

before i found this book, i spent alot of time with the Trachtenberg method. i just couldn't see what all the fuss was about. it seemed hoakey to me. now i know why. compared to this, it IS hoakey.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book!!!   October 21, 2008

I've never been good at math, but a couple years ago, I began to love Calculus and ended up taking Calc 1, 2 & 3. However, the only thing that was slowing me down was the simple arithmetic and mental calculations that I was so bad at doing. A friend recommended this book to me after I told her that my slow mental math was the reason I kept running out of time on the MCAT Physical Sciences section. I got this book two weeks ago and I've already increased my MCAT score by two whole points. This book is amazing and can really change your life. Do yourself a favor and buy it.

Thanks Dr. Benjamin!
